Year 6 SATs Revision: Maths and English in 6 Weeks

A parent messaged Aiden in March last year, worried her daughter — sharp, chatty, good with numbers in everyday life — had frozen completely on a practice reasoning paper. Eleven out of fifty. That's the pattern behind most SATs revision that goes wrong: families assume the gap is knowledge, when it's usually pacing, question-reading, or simply never having practised under the conditions the real test will use.
What Year 6 SATs actually cover
The SATs sit in mid-May and test three areas. Maths has three papers: one arithmetic paper (30 minutes, calculation only) and two reasoning papers (40 minutes each, word problems and multi-step questions). Reading is one paper, 60 minutes, three unrelated texts with a mix of literal and inferential questions. English grammar, punctuation and spelling — GPS — splits into a grammar and punctuation paper plus a separate short spelling test read aloud by the teacher.
Writing isn't tested by exam. It's assessed by the class teacher across the whole year using a framework called Teacher Assessment Framework, so no amount of SATs paper practice touches it directly — that's worth knowing before a family spends a week drilling essay writing under the wrong assumption.

The 6-week plan
Week 1: Diagnose, don't guess
Sit one full maths reasoning paper and one full reading paper under timed conditions, cold, with no prior revision. Mark them against the official mark scheme, not a gut estimate of "how it felt." List every wrong answer by topic, not by paper — fractions, place value, inference, whatever it is. This list is the entire revision plan. Everything else in the six weeks exists to work through it.
Week 2: Arithmetic fluency
Before touching reasoning, fix arithmetic speed. The arithmetic paper rewards automaticity: times tables to 12, long division, fraction and decimal conversion, without hesitation. A child who has to derive 7×8 from scratch loses time on every single paper, not just the arithmetic one, because reasoning questions assume that fluency as a given. Ten minutes a day of timed arithmetic drilling, not an hour once a week — the frequency matters more than the session length here.
Week 3: Reasoning strategy, timed from now on
Move to reasoning papers under strict timing. The skill being trained isn't maths content at this point, it's question triage: read the whole question before writing anything, flag anything that looks like it'll take more than two minutes, and come back to it after finishing the questions you're confident on. Most marks lost in reasoning papers aren't from wrong maths — they're from a child stuck on question 9 with twelve unanswered easier questions still sitting further down the page.
Week 4: Reading comprehension and GPS
Reading marks correlate closely with how carefully a child reads the question, not just the text. Practise the habit of underlining the exact words in the question that tell you what to look for in the passage, before searching for the answer. For GPS, focus revision on the handful of terms that appear every year — subordinate clause, fronted adverbial, relative clause, modal verb — rather than the full grammar glossary. If your child freezes on terminology rather than the concept itself, that's the specific gap worth closing.
Week 5: First full mock, all three papers
Sit all three subjects across two or three days, replicating the actual test schedule as closely as reasonably possible — similar time of day, no phone in the room, a proper break between papers. Mark everything against official mark schemes. Compare this result to week one: the gap between the two tells you whether the plan is working and where the remaining four weeks of the year should still focus, if you're starting earlier than six weeks out.
Week 6: Targeted repair, then stop
Spend the final week almost entirely on whatever the week 5 mock revealed as still weak, plus light daily arithmetic to keep fluency sharp. Don't introduce new topics this close to the test — a child cramming an unfamiliar concept four days before SATs is more likely to arrive anxious than better prepared. The evening before, no revision. A tired, wound-up child underperforms a rested one who knows slightly less, almost every time.
What actually goes wrong in SATs revision
Two mistakes show up over and over in the families Aiden works with. First: too much untimed practice, too late. A child who's only ever done reasoning questions with unlimited time has no internal sense of pacing, and that only gets built by sitting real timed papers — worksheets alone don't do it. Second: revision that covers everything at equal intensity instead of targeting the diagnosed weak spots from week one. Six weeks isn't enough time to re-teach the entire KS2 curriculum from scratch, and trying to usually means the genuine gaps get less attention than they need.

What SATs results are actually for
SATs results go to the child's secondary school and occasionally inform initial Year 7 class groupings, but they sit on no permanent record and touch nothing at GCSE. The exam is a checkpoint on where a child's core literacy and numeracy stand at eleven, not a verdict on their academic future. Worth saying to an anxious Year 6 pupil directly, in those words, more than once during the six weeks.
