How to revise for A-levels: a subject-by-subject guide
Former Pearson examiner explains how revision strategy shifts by subject. Specific techniques for maths, sciences, humanities and languages at A-level.
The three students Aiden remembers most clearly from his Pearson standardisation meetings are not the ones who wrote the best essays. They are the ones who understood, exactly, what each question was testing, and had practised that specific cognitive move hundreds of times before sitting down with their paper.
That understanding rarely comes from a textbook. It comes from recognising that A-level Chemistry is a different subject from A-level History, and that revising for one the same way you revise for the other is a reliable route to underperformance.
Why generic revision advice misses the point
There is no shortage of "top ten revision tips" articles online. Most are reasonable for GCSE: use flashcards, do past papers, review your mistakes. At A-level, that advice is not wrong; it is incomplete.
GCSE rewards recall of well-defined content. A-level rewards something harder: applying knowledge to contexts you have not seen before, constructing extended arguments under time pressure, and deriving conclusions when the formula is not given. Those are different skills, and they require different preparation.
The shift worth making early is simple to state but harder to implement: stop revising your subjects the same way.
Sciences: worked examples beat flashcards
In four years marking Edexcel GCSE papers, and from watching A-level students across Manchester, one pattern predicts underperformance in Physics and Chemistry consistently. Students recall definitions accurately but cannot apply them.
Flashcards work well for vocabulary, units, and the occasional fact that must be retrieved verbatim. The marks that distinguish grade bands at A-level come from application and evaluation questions, particularly the 6-mark "explain the method" and "evaluate the evidence" formats, which test reasoning rather than recall.
A student who knows the definition of activation energy will not earn those marks unless they can explain why a catalyst increases reaction rate by providing an alternative pathway with lower activation energy, and why that matters for a specific industrial context. That reasoning is practised, not remembered.
What works instead: work through past papers topic by topic under timed conditions before moving to full papers. For every question you get wrong, find the worked example in your notes that covers the same conceptual move, complete it again without looking at the solution, then redo the original past-paper question. This loop is slower than re-reading notes but transfers far better to exam conditions.
For Biology specifically, avoid treating it like a humanities subject. A-level Biology has a high proportion of application questions using experimental data. Practising interpretation of unfamiliar graphs and tables builds the skill that earns those marks. Content review alone does not.
Mathematics: read the mark scheme before you mark yourself right
A-level Maths is unusual because students can produce correct working and still lose marks. Method marks often specify exactly which steps an examiner will accept, and those decisions are not always intuitive.
Pearson standardisation meetings regularly involved experienced markers debating a single line of algebra. The student who understands what "show that" requires in a question versus "prove that", or why writing "let x =" is essential in certain coordinate geometry answers, has a concrete advantage over one who has simply revised more content without understanding examiner expectations.
What works instead: build a mark-scheme vocabulary file early in Year 13. Each time you encounter a notation or instruction in a past paper that you do not fully understand ("hence or otherwise", "use the substitution u = ...", "state any assumptions made"), write it down, find the corresponding mark-scheme guidance, and note one worked example alongside. Forty or fifty entries by exam season covers most of the decision landscape examiners actually face when standardising.
On practice scheduling, interleaving beats blocking. Revising all of differentiation, then all of integration, then all of vectors produces faster short-term gains that evaporate under exam pressure. Mixing topics within sessions is slower to feel productive but transfers significantly better. Humanities: argue first, accumulate evidence second
History, English Literature and Philosophy share a structural revision problem. The content is enormous, and the arguments that earn marks are not inside the content. They are in how that content is assembled.
A common pattern is spending most revision time accumulating knowledge (dates, quotations, philosophers' names) and a fraction of that time practising the argument structures that organise knowledge under exam conditions. That ratio should be reversed.
For History: take each period and write five thesis statements you could defend. Not facts, but claims. "The Congress of Vienna failed primarily because of Castlereagh's inability to manage domestic opinion" is a thesis. "The Congress of Vienna took place in 1814-1815" is a fact. Practise building an argument to a thesis in 25 minutes, then evaluate which evidence you used, which you omitted, and whether your counter-argument was substantive. A-level History essays are marked on argument sophistication, not content density.
For English Literature: quotation selection matters more than quotation volume. Students who embed quotations from every scene often score lower than students who use six precise quotations and analyse each one for language, form and context. Choose quotations that carry multiple readings, ones interpretable through character, symbol and historical context simultaneously. Know those quotations cold before you sit the exam.
For Philosophy: practise constructing objections before practising arguments. A-level examiners reward evaluation, and evaluation means genuine engagement with the strongest version of an opposing position, not a token paragraph appended at the end. If you cannot write three sentences that make the counterargument genuinely compelling, you have not revised that topic well enough yet.
Languages: produce before you perform
A-level French, Spanish and German students often re-read vocabulary lists and grammar notes for hours. That produces the sensation of revision without much of the result.
Active production (writing sentences, translating texts aloud, recording yourself and listening back) builds the retrieval pathways that exams test. A practical approach: take ten complex grammatical structures from your specification and produce three original sentences using each, without help, every week. Test yourself on vocabulary from the set texts by writing definitions in the target language rather than translating into English.
For the essay component, analyse six past essay titles from your specification. Identify what each is actually asking: a comparison, an evaluation of a character's function, a thematic argument. Write a plan for each — thesis, three argument points, counter-argument — before you write any prose. The planning habit builds faster than the writing habit and is what separates structured responses from content dumps in the exam room.
Two mistakes worth naming
Avoiding unfinished topics. Skipping content that has not yet been covered in class feels logical until exam day, when mixed-topic questions make partial knowledge unavoidable. Even incomplete understanding of a topic earns marks on application questions; blank space does not.
Treating all revision sessions as equivalent. Ninety minutes of past-paper practice the week before an exam and ninety minutes of passive re-reading in January are not the same revision. Track what you are actually doing in each session. If most sessions involve low-cognitive-load activities (re-reading, copying notes), shift the balance toward high-load practice: timed writing, problem sets without prompts, or explaining a topic to someone else from memory.
The subject-by-subject principle extends to every decision in revision. Once you know what a mark scheme is actually rewarding in each subject, revision stops being about covering content and starts being about building the specific skill the examiner is testing.
